Academic Writing | Chorley Art Gallery

Write a guided walk through the Gallery for a handbook, giving details of its history as you go along. Write about 150 words.
A- Entrance Hall
B- Main (Original) Hall - Still with some of Chorley's original paintings
C- Cavendish extension - destroyed by fire 1810, rebuilt 1930
D- Special exhibitions section
E- Administrative area. No entry.
F- Milton extension, 1800, second oldest gallery
G- Workshops and art classes
My Essay plan
  • Use imperative verbs - 'Go here', 'turn there'.
  • Start at A then B (mention original paintings But say it differently).
  • Then C (mention fire), different door to get to D. Add that there's no entry to admin area.
  • Maybe G next and finish with F.
  • Add 'welcome to the gallery at start' and 'thank you for visiting' at the end if extra words are needed.
  • Quick check - have I covered all the information in the notes?

  1. Example Essay -

The Chorley art gallery is over 200 years old. The original hall lies behind the entrance hall, and still contains some paintings by Chorley himself.

Instead of going directly to the back of the Gallery, turn into the Cavendish room. This room was abandoned after a fire in 1810 and only rebuilt 120 years later.

Leave the Cavendish room by the door to the special exhibitions area. After looking at the pictures there, do not go through the door nearest the back wall; this leads to the administration area, and is closed to the public.

Instead go into the Milton extension, which was built in 1800. This is the second oldest part of the gallery. Walk straight through to watch the activities of the workshops and art classes in the next room, and then leave by the other door to view the Milton extension.

Thank you for visiting the gallery.
